Where do you Yoga?
| April/May 2010

Dear Julia,
Spring
is here and summer is finally on the horizon. It is the time of year we
are eager to emerge from the winter blues and renew our fitness regime
in anticipation of sporting our warm weather wardrobes. I am already
dreaming of walking around in sandals and a sundress sans coat, hat,
scarf and the layers of clothes. Have you considered trying Yoga or
increasing your practice frequency to get fit for summer? It is what
keeps me on fit and on my toes!
Where do you Yoga? Ever Yoga on
retreat? On the beach? How about in Greece? Yoga can do all of these
this June on my Yoga Retreat to the beautiful island of Crete. It is
less than two months away and the excitement is building. If you have
not checked out the updated rates
(finally the Euro is moving in my favor!), please do so right away. The
early bird discount expires this Thursday, so now is the time to do
something special for yourself and sign up. I hope you can all join me
for what will be a truly unforgettable vacation in a picturesque
setting.
If you prefer to keep your Yoga local be sure to
check out my ongoing group public classes at Yoga People in Brooklyn
Heights and my new kids classes at Yoga Village in the Flatiron
District, starting on May 4th. If your schedule does not allow you
might consider some private sessions in the comfort of your home.
Be
sure to try out Viparita Karani (aka Legs up the Wall) our Yoga pose to
try this month at home as described below. It is especially calming
before bedtime. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope to connect with everyone soon!
Have a great day, Juila (aka the Brooklyn Yogini)

Yoga Pose to Try This Month
Viparita Karani - also
known as legs up the wall
-
How to set up - Pick a wall that is clear to at least
your hip height. Sit on the floor with one hip to the wall, knees bent, soles
of the feet to the floor and side of the legs against the wall. As you press
into hand farthest from the wall into the floor, swing the leg up and around
towards the wall and release the back and head on to the floor. You will be
lying on your back with the legs straight up the wall, creating a 90-degree
angle with the body. You want the seat to be either right up against the wall
or a couple of inches away. The feet are flexed and legs hugging close towards
one another. Arms are released at your sides either slightly away from the body
with the palms up or into a T shape at shoulder height for more of an opening
across the chest. Close your eyes and rest here for 10-15 minutes. -
Variations - if the backs of the legs are very tight
allow the seat to come a little bit further away from the wall so the legs are
lea ning into it at a slight angle, if this is still not comfortable allow the
knees to be softly bent. For a slight back bend use a pillow or a rolled up blanket
underneath sacrum to elevate the hips.
- How to come out - draw the soles of the feet to the
wall and bend the knees, take several breaths and then draw the knees into the
chest, giving them and squeeze and slowly roll onto your right side. Rest in
the fetal position for a few breaths. Press into the left palm and slowly make
your way up to sit.
-
Benefits - induces the relaxation response by
stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. Releases lower back pain and
fluid retention in lower body, helps with insomnia, anxiety, headaches, mild
depression and varicose veins.
